Freedom from Knee Pain

Knee pain stemming from osteoarthritis (OA) or degenerative joint disease (DJD) impacts a vast number of Americans. Geniculate artery embolization (GAE) is a novel approach to minimally invasive, outpatient treatment that provides up to 90% of patients with noticeable knee pain improvement.

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

Treatment Options

Many possible treatments are available for knee pain, including steroid injections, physical therapy, surgery, and genicular artery embolization (GAE). When experiencing knee pain, many patients will first try physical therapy. Prolonged use of NSAIDs can lead to opioid dependence and toxicity, so patients typically steer clear of long-term medication therapy options. Injections of steroids can also be used to provide momentary relief. GAE is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that offers long-term pain relief and reduces the need for pain medication or injections; it’s an excellent treatment option for patients hoping to delay or avoid the need for major surgery like knee replacement.

Geniculate Artery Embolization (GAE) Procedure

Osteoarthritis (OA)-related abnormal and inflammatory blood vessels in the knee are treated with a minimally invasive procedure called GAE, which stops blood flow to those blood vessels. The formation of new arteries in the knee lining, known as synovial angiogenesis, is the cause of pain resulting from inflammation. By obstructing the blood flow using GAE, inflammation is reduced, and up to 90% of patients report a noticeable improvement in their knee pain.

What to Expect on Treatment Day

VidaVascular offers a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure called geniculate artery embolization. Our interventional radiologist will use a straightforward needle stick to insert a small catheter into the knee’s damaged geniculate arteries while the patient is under moderate sedation. Subsequently, tiny particles are discharged from the catheter into the inflammatory capillaries to form an embolization, a blockage that still permits complete blood flow to the rest of the leg and knee. Patients will typically experience notable relief from knee pain over the next few weeks after the procedure, and they are released from the hospital after a few hours.

GAE is a quick, minimally invasive procedure that provides significant pain relief and a short recovery period. It’s crucial to remember that this is a relatively new procedure and that the field of study is still advancing further. It’s crucial to go over all the benefits and drawbacks of the procedure in-depth with your doctor. Get in touch with us, and we’ll be pleased to walk you through this process in greater detail.

VidaVascular is one of the few clinics in the Greater DC Area offering this minimally invasive therapy option in an outpatient setting.

I was so impressed with this clinic and Dr. Antani and his staff. I had been going to the GWU vascular center (had laser ablation and other procedures there) and switched for various reasons. I found the time Dr. Antani spent with me to explain things and consider the options for my varicose and spider veins to be of such greater quality and duration than the service I got at GWU. He truly considered my case and provided me with great options. I highly recommend them for both medical and cosmetic treatments.

Dr.Antani and his staff were fantastic and very patient, kind and welcoming. They took much time in explaining information and details of procedures. I felt very comfortable and pleased with my treatment and experience with them. A very caring and kind practice. Very professional.

Dr Antani performed sclerotherapy not once but three times over the past month and each time, he was so patient and kind. He fully explains the procedure, what is causing it and all options. I had a very stubborn vein (why I ended up back there 3 times - no fault of his) and he really took the time to make sure it was treated. Ashley, the office manager and Gretchen in Springfield were so kind and accommodating. There was never a long wait to be seen and the practice is very professional. They have a good deal on their website for new sclerotherapy patients which is what had originally brought me in.

Great Doctor, nurses and office rep! They let you know every step and no waiting. So glad I got my legs done.

Dr. Antani is a very knowledgeable and capable doctor. He was also very nice and patient with me when I asked a ton of questions! His staff is also very nice and responsive. Sometimes my appointment gets pushed back 15 minutes depending on their schedule, but they always let me know in advance. And I've never waited very long to be seen. I got venous ablation and sclerotherapy done in his office, as I had bad varicose veins under my skin (and a few spider veins), which would only become more troublesome and noticable over time. Needless to say, the procedure was a success! My legs feel much better (not as swollen, much lighter, no pain!). Thanks Dr. Antani!

Dr. Antani is a true professional! He knows what he is doing! He will explain each procedure, what to expect during and after, and next steps. No rushing in and out. They follow-up to see how you're doing and to answer any questions. Plus the office staff is very pleasant and helpful. (Healthgrades.com)

Silvia C Patient

I came to the office for a free screening and Dr. Antani was really helpful, he took his time to explain the procedure with much details and patience (which I didn't receive at other facilities). This was the main reason why I became a patient to their office. Additionally, staff is friendly and provides flexible hours.

Ronald P Patient

Doctor Antani and his staff are highly professional and competent. Friendly too. I have no complaints. (Healthgrades.com)

Kristen B Patient

The doctor spoke frankly about the prognosis and risks of sclerotherapy, and the procedure was performed by a nurse (Kim) who was very friendly, helpful and thorough. Pain wise, I would say it is comparable to laser vein removal since you are injected in the spider veins multiple times with a very small needle - just felt like quick little pricks or being snapped with a rubber band, but very tolerable in my opinion.

Warm welcome. Explained process and procedure with great detail. (Groupon)
